50,000 watts of local news, compelling talk, how-to/advice programs and play-by-play sports, keeps Windsor and surrounding areas informed and involved, 24hours a day. CKLW is the local Town Hall, the Canadian perspective in a sea of U.S. media. People who listen to us are in touch with their community. AM800 ... See more 0 is the home of Windsor's number one morning show. AM800's talk programming is talk for today about issues that are important to the 25-54 demo. With a comprehensive local focus on news, community issues and information as well as specially selected CHUM Radio Network programming, CKLW is extremely active in the community. History CKLW first went on the air on June 2, 1932, but its call letters were actually CKOK and it broadcast 5,000 at AM540. In 1933, the signal shifted to 840AM and that's when the call letters were changed to CKLW. It wasn't until March 29th, 1941 that it moved to its present position of AM800. On September 7th, 1949, CKLW increased its power to 50,000 watts. It became the first station in North America to establish an unattended transmitter operation. During the 30's and 40's, CKLW aired an eclectic mix of programming. It featured some well known broadcasters like Joe Gentile and Toby David. In the 40's and 50's, other personalities included Bud Davies, and Sportscaster Bud Lynch. In the late 50's and early 60's, Robin Seymour, Joe Vann, and Ron Knowles were well known broadcasters on CKLW. During the 50's, CKLW originated the slogans "Wherever you go, there's radio", and "CKLW your good neighbour station". During this time, the station focused its efforts on the Windsor community. The 1960's and 70's were the golden age of radio for CKLW. With a successful Top 40 format and slick production values, CKLW "The Big 8" dominated the ratings in the motor city making it one of the legendary radio stations in North America. For the better part of the 1980's, CKLW was a big band station. In 1993, it was purchased by CHUM Radio and the format swapped with the news/talk station at that time, 580 CKWW. AM800 continues today as a successful news and information station geared towards Windsor and Essex County.
