ESPN Radio 94.1 began life in October of 1928 as AM 1310. The station has been a mainstay in the area for 80 years. See more by Tony Mercurio, on September 15, 1986. The show was created by Sandy Goldberg and Fred Wright shortly after they came to run the station. One of their first ideas was to make WGH-AM 1310 a sport's radio station. Therefore, they decided to start the first weeknight "sportstalk" show ever in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Some newspaper people said "afternoon sportstalk" would last one month. Well, "THE TONY MERCURIO SHOW", is now in it's 24th year. WGH-AM 1310 became the first all-sports radio station in Virginia, on May 30, 1992. WGH-AM 1310 became part of the Sports Entertainment Network, in addition to carrying "afternoon sportstalk". On, February 1, 1999, WGH-AM 1310 became the second ESPN Radio 1310 full-time affiliate in the country. Thus, WGH-AM 1310 became known as ESPN Radio 1310.
