One Becomes Two
Gold and Capital Gold has its roots in Capital FM which first took to London’s airwaves on October 16 1973, as the country’s second commercial radio station (the first, LBC, was launched a week earlier). Capital Radio’s remit was to provide “general entertainment” and LBC was designated a “news and information” station.
In 1988, Capital Radio changed it’s on-air identity leading to the formation of two seperate stations - Capital FM and 1548AM Capital Gold. The 1990 Broadcasting Act ended the practice of simultaneous broadcasting on FM and AM in order to make way for more local radio services.
The Greatest Hits From The 60s, 70s and 80s... And More
From 1988, Capital Gold featured classic hits from the 60s, 70s, and 80s and was the UK’s most popular MW/AM radio station.
However, Capital Gold continued to evolve and widened its catalogue from a large number of core artists to include more than just their classic hits. Alongside much loved singles you could also hear rarities such as album tracks, B-sides and live performances.
Music from artists who have gained legendary status in recent years were also added, such as Coldplay (pictured), Scissor Sisters, Oasis, The Corrs, Robbie Williams and The Sterophonics. Capital Gold also showcased new music from established Capital Gold artists.
