Russell is proud of its heritage, friendliness, and hometown hero Bob Dole. Born and raised in Russell, Dole has been forever grateful for the help he received from the community after being seriously injured in World War II. Dole expresses his gratitude on many occasions, most notably when he returns to his hometown for special events. In 1996, Russell was in the national spotlight on several occasions during Dole's presidential campaign. In addition to seconding his Republican nomination for President in August, Russell hosted Dole's nomination of Jack Kemp as his Vice-Presidential running mate, also in August, and Dole's birthday party in late July. Russell has plenty to offer even when Bob Dole isn't home. Its attractions include the Oil Patch and Fossil Station Museums, the Deines Cultural Center, the historic Guernon and Heym-Oliver Houses, the Dream Theater, the Russell County Veteran's Memorial, and several recreational facilities for the entire family. Be sure to stop by the Memorial Park area; location of the Russell Municipal Golf Course, the Duke Johnson Memorial Swimming Pool, baseball facilities, and the Play Park. Russell is also less than a half hour away from Lake Wilson, one of the most popular recreation areas in Kansas. Spend a day in Russell and see what small-town life is all about.
