The sound

Put on the air in 1964, KSNO was originally on the AM radio dial. It was launched by Bill Dunaway and Barbara McGloughlin. Barbara wanted ... See more the station to play her Montovani records and Dunaway wanted it for news. It began broadcasting from the front window of the Aspen Times over 40 years ago. Through the years many Aspen notables were on the air, including Marcus Morton, David Johnson, Jimmy Rabbit, Allan Scott, Jeanette Darnauer, Pat Bingham, Michael Chandler, Bill Hogue, Stev Straight, Bobby Mason, Kenny Thomas, Jeffery Evans, and many others. Notable past DJ's also include Billy Conn, Peter Jaycox, Rob Leventhal, and Peggy Johnston. KSNO became an FM station in the early 80's and played Country music during its tenure under by local legend and ad man Michael Chandler. Later in the 80's , David Johnson took over and called Jimmy Rabbit ( no relation to WKRP's Johnny Fever) in to make it a Rock hits station. After five years of success, KSNO continued to evolve. In 1989 it became “The Breeze” --a syndicated Jazz format for a few years. In the mid 90's Cliff Gardner bought KSNO and played Alternative Rock throughout the 90's as the Mountain. In 2001, Thomas Dobrez and Cool Radio, LLC purchased KSNO and began building what has become a staple in the community. Declared Dobrez on the station's first day as KSNO…The Sound.. We will try to give this great community the radio station it deserves. Blending a fine mix of quality rock and roll from the past with the most notable music of today, KSNO is an eclectic aural landscape that reflects the spirit and attitude that is the Roaring Fork Valley today. When multi-media seasoned General Manager Mark Michaud took the lead at KSNO FM in Aspen at the beginning of 2012 the station quickly regained its prominence at the top of the Roaring Fork Valley media pile. KSNO took on the skin of KSNO "The Mammoth" without upsetting the music cart and immediately infused this almost 50 year old station into every local and regional community through formation of an e-commerce website "Mammoth Deals" and weekly in-person event schedule. Rebranding as "The Mammoth" aligned the company with the recent world acclaimed discovery of the most significant archeological finds in North America.
