Some station history: When the station first signed on in March 1975 the call letters were WWMH which stood for We're Woodruff, Minocqua & Hazelhurst. Our operating power was 5,000 watts. The original studio was built in the concession stand of the then Castle Drive-in Theater located 5-miles south of the Island. The original tower site was where The Waters of Minocqua is now located. The format in the late 70's and early 80's was a mix of Easy listening, and Country. The emphasis was on local news, weather, and sports. In 1981 WFBZ AM 1570 signed on. The programming featured Big Band Era Music. In 1982 WFBZ simulcast with WWMH until 1985 when it split off once again and was renamed WMYM. We Make Your Memories with a nostalgia format. In 1992 WWMH and WMYM became WMQA. The "MQA" in our call letters are a shortening of our city of license, MINOCQUA. At the same time the power was increased from 5,000 watts to the current 25,000 watts. In 1995 the AM station became WLKD and went back to a nostalgia format until 2004 when the programming shifted to ESPN Radio. For more than 30-years we have been proud to serve the Northwoods. We're excited to now bring OLDIES 95.9 to the Northwoods and look forward toserving the great listeners in the Lakeland Area.
