its vision of multi-channel broadcasting of diverse cultural and linguistic productions via supplemental digital audio channels. This is a unique collaboration between the private and public sectors, a first such alliance in multicultural broadcasting.
The Multicultural Radio Network is one-of-a-kind in Minnesota, and perhaps the entire U.S. Although there are a few local Spanish-language commercial radio broadcasts and weekly community radio programs with various hourly programs for cultural/ethnic broadcasts, there are no daily 24-hour broadcasts of public radio content reaching the audience proposed or in a multilingual format. Nowhere in the history of Minnesota has this diverse group of communities come together on a joint project let alone the launching of a 24/hour/day multilingual public radio broadcast.
Each of the MCRN member groups already provides outreach to its communities for social service, education, economic development and/or cultural and language preservation. They will be able to build upon this foundation for outreach and promotion of the broadcasts. Youth from the various minority communities will work with their local MCRN partner to acquire job skills in production and radio broadcast as well as an understanding of business and finance. Because there is community ownership of the broadcasts in these various minority communities, they will be able to facilitate community forums, broadcasts from remote sites of community events, panel discussion and call-ins all in their own languages.
