Real Country 96.9 - KGY-FM Info

About 96.9 The Sound: Ten Questions with Program Director Kevin Huffer How did The Sound come about? It followed a brain storming session when we were awarded a power upgrade. The Sound was not the intended name to start with. Actually we bounced around ideas for weeks until one afternoon ... See more n I’m staring out the window, looking at Puget Sound, and that’s when it clicked! What decided the format? Research. I listened for hours to the stations around the south sound. There was no sense in trying to copy anyone, after all what would be the point? We also asked local people their opinions. It was clear there was a gap in programming locally, so I set about filling that gap. I knew we had to target adults 25 – 54, the so called “generation X”; and I knew what stations people of that age group loved “backed in the day”. It had to have a broad appeal too. Furthermore I knew it had to be upbeat with local talent, originated locally, and the appearance we always were moving! Can you describe the format in one sentence? Sure. Just think the popular top 40 hit music stations brought up to date: there is a retro feel to The Sound blending classic hits (cool classics) with selected songs from the current top 40 (hot hits). Define cool classics and hot hits Cool Classics: the popular Top 40 “big” hits from the 1970’s to the 1990’s, spiced with only the most well known songs from the 1960’s; We focus more on the eighties; Hot Hits: Current and recent hit songs as defined by Billboard, and tracks from 2000 on. You do play rare tracks though, right? Yes we do. These are songs that radio played and were only minor hits BUT you know every word; the songs others have long forgotten because of music testing. Don’t get me wrong, music testing has a place, but The Sound music team believes you should not program by this alone. What is the official term for your format? Funnily enough there really isn’t one! OK, it’s Modern Adult Contemporary, BUT I think Modern Hot Adult Contemporary better describes it! How long did it take to get the station on the air? From ideas on paper to air took a year. The busiest year ever I think! Is all programming local? Talent local? All programming is local, with two exceptions. The Jim Brickman show and Weekly Pop 20 are sourced from networks; and of course we broadcast a 3 minute CBS news cast three times a day. All the music though is programmed locally. The remainder of our on-air talent are local (obviously I didn’t originally come from here!): they know and love the south sound, and most have been on other radio stations in the south sound. Why did you decide to have local news? Actually it came from local people and internal thoughts! Most stations only do news in the morning, and news happens all the time! I wanted us to have news at both morning and afternoon drive, and I knew it should not waste anyone’s time. That’s why all local news is under a minute. What made you decide on the station sound? History really. I wanted the station to feel familiar. I found a fantastic voice we use for most of our identification: Paul the voice man, whom is highly talented, and on my wavelength! For the sung jingles I wanted the best. That’s why I commissioned Jam Creative Productions in Dallas; Jonathan Wolfert and the team came up trumps, as always! You will notice a female voice used some times: this is former Miss Washington and local actress Talia Hastie. The mix of Jam jingles, together with Paul and Talia’s voice are just awesome. Unlike any other station in the area.

We live in a really nice 2 bed room mobil home. Our name is John and Debbie. Our home address is 930 Trosper Rd SW SP 28 Tumwater, WA 98512. Our home phone number is 1(360) 515-0431. We have no children. We are retired. My husband and I. We were able to put up a small artifical tree with lights. There are no gifts underneath the tree. That is nothing new for us. It would be our heart felt gratitude if someone could help my husband put up some Christmas lights. It has been alittle hard for us this year. We would have no money to give you. I'am 59 years old and my husband is 56 years old. God Bless.

I agree more of the older music, Tammy Wynette, George Jones, Faron Young, ones like these wonderful singers. Love the new ones that have kept the music country but most of them are getting away from classic country.
