Dubuque Man Sentenced in Shooting of Girlfriend DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) - A Dubuque man has been sentenced to up to 50 years in prison for killing his live-in girlfriend. Teodoro Borrego pled guilty Wednesday to second-degree murder for shooting 40-year-old Shani Smith on Feb. 24. Borrego said in court that he went to the home he and Smith shared on Feb. 24 to ask for money. Borrego says Smith grinned and showed him a picture of a man on her phone. Borrego says he then walked to the garage, grabbed a shotgun and shot Smith out of rage. Borrego will likely serve at least 70 percent of his sentence according to statute. Area Credit Unions to Merge Two area credit unions are working on plans to merge. DuTrac and RACOM officials announced the deal Wednesday, and the board of directors at each credit union have signed a letter of intent to merge. The merger is slated for completion at the end of the year, pending regulatory approval and approval by RACOM members. Dyersville Council Approves New Ward Map The Dyersville City Council has approved a new ward map. The council voted 4-1 to approve plan A. Attachment Western Dubuque Biodiesel Pursuing Stock Classifaction Changes Western Dubuque Biodiesel shareholders will vote this fall on changes to their stock. Company officials are looking to reclassify the stock units, which would deregister the shares with the Securities and Exchange Commission. If the change is approved, it would save the company hundreds-of-thousands of dollars in fees associated with SEC compliance. The Western Dubuque Biodiesel Board of Directors approved the change earlier this year. The shareholders vote will take place September 21st. More Than 100,000 Fish Killed in Dubuque County Creek More than 104,000 fish died in a fish kill on Whitewater Creek in Dubuque County earlier this month. The DNR says the fish, mostly minnows and suckers, were valued at more than $96,000. The fish kill orginated at an open lot hog and cattle operation owned by Wayne Demmer near Peosta on June 18th. DNR officials say the incident is still under investigation.
