The story of 4MK began in Mackay at the home of Jack Williams Sr, in Nelson Street in 1931. The date was January 12th, and
Jack Williams Sr & Jr were given permission to begin broadcast a radio station, the Federal Governments broadcasting authorities desigted the call sign “4MK”.
At 8pm that night, January 12th 1931, 4MK went to air for the very first time, in the front room of Jack Williams Snr. It was the only radio station North of Brisbane.
In 2005, 4MK had a great thrill, a phone call from Jean Williams, the wife of our founder, Jack Williams Jr.
The phone call came out of the blue, with the simple state, I have your first microphone and I’d like to bring it back. And she did.
Some months later, Jean Williams walked through the front door with a small cardboard box in her hand, in it was the very first microphone from 1931, with a bug 4MK written on the back.
The journey home continues now in 2009.
After 10 years on the FM band (26th June 1999 4MK FM started), 4MK is back home, on 1026 AM.
Please enjoy the grand old lady back home, now with News, Talk, and the Music You Love.
