WCPS-AM 760 was granted its broadcast license in 1947. The Curtis Media Group purchased WCPS along with it’s sister station, WKTC 104.1 in 1987. The ... See more e two radio stations had been operated by Coastal Plains Broadcasting Company headed by Robert Harper for over 25 years as a very successful AM/FM operation. Shortly after acquiring the AM/FM Stations, Curtis Media Group had the opportunity to buy WEQR-WGBR in Goldsboro, but these stations had an overlap with WKTC. The solution was to sell the 104.1 frequency and this was done. Osborne Communications purchased the 104.1 frequency, and the Curtis Media Group retained the Call Letters, the format and the staff of WKTC and “moved” all of this to 96.5. Thus, the end result was that WKTC operated on 96.5 and Osborne move in with the 104.1 frequency moving to Raleigh studios. It is now know as Foxy 107/104. WCPS operated as a black formatted station with contemporary and other gospel for a while. Curtis Media decided to institute an all talk radio format with some gospel on Sundays. WCPS was moved to Rocky Mount and was operated by Dan Berman, a regional broadcaster under an LMA agreement with Curtis Media. In May of 2000, WCPS was sold to Johnson Broadcast Ventures, Ltd., headed by Jimmy Johnson who also owned WARR Radio Station in Warrenton, NC. Johnson’s first moved was to relocate WCPS back to Tarboro, NC.
