Born November 13, 1916, in Des Moines, IA, she is a daughter of the last Israel and Sophia G. Caplan. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur S. Romm; beloved brothers, Morris and Harold Caplan and her sister, Ruth Rummins. A graduate of North High School, Des Moines, along with her two sisters and three brothers, her first job as a child was at the family business, Caplan Bakery. Bessie and her large family, including 59 cousins, were all raised in Des Moines. Later, she was a big band singer on radio station WHO Clear Channel Radio, Des Moines, in the 1930s. She worked with Ronald Regan who was the sports announcer on WHO at that time. She sang with the Vaughn Monroe Orchestra and her stage name was Cappy Lynn. Once Bessie started singing, she never stopped. Even after leaving Hollywood to move to Midland, she was an entertainer, a beloved mother and grandmother. She leaves behind her daughter, Judy R. Portonova; grandchildren, Amy Jo Portonova, J. Scott Portonova and his wife, Cheryl, all of Midland; a sister, Rosie C. Jacobs; a brother, William Caplan and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Bessie is also survived by her cherished family pets; the four dogs, Nala, Simba, Rifiki and Zazu and Joco the Parrot. A private service will take place at a later date. The family extends their gratitude to the staff of Beaver Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and Mother Teresa Hospice. The family is being served by the D. L. WILLIAMS FUNERAL HOME, 848 Midland Ave., Midland, PA 15059.
