WMCS Info

For the past 30 years, Milwaukee has been a focal point of Willie Davis’ life. He still owns a residence in Milwaukee and maintains a strong local presence through ownership of radio stations 1290 WMCS, 102.1WLUM-FM and WLDB-FM 93.3. Here’s how the story begins…While Davis was s star defensive end ... See more end at Grambling University, the Cleveland Browns of the National Football League drafted him. After 2 seasons, the legendary Vince Lombardi lured him to the Green Bay Packers. Davis played 10 seasons without ever missing a game and as defensive captain for the Packers helped lead the team to several championship seasons eventually earning induction into the Packers and Pro Football Hall of Fame. Soon after retirement, the Jos. Schlitz Brewing Company offered him a beer distribution in Watts, California, where he became the first African American to own a major beer distributorship. Shortly thereafter, Davis entered the broadcasting industry in Los Angeles. In 1977, he purchased KACE-FM, an urban station in Los Angeles, which was housed on the second floor of the beer distributorship. Bitten by the broadcast bug, on February 14, 1979, Davis brought Milwaukee stations, WAWA-AM (1590 on the dial) and WAWAFM (102.1). He split the two stations and gave the FN station new call letters – WLUM “We Love U Milwaukee”. In 1986, WAWA-AM moved down the dial to 1290 andWMVP was born. In 1996, WMVP’s call letters were replaced with WMCS – “Milwaukee’s Community Station”. In a past interview with the Urban Network magazine, Davis said, “From the time I purchased the radio station to this day, my desire was to have a station that was committed to the Milwaukee urban community where we could focus on issues and concerns pertinent to the community.” On April 12, 2004, WMCS enhances that focus with an expanded talk format. This change allowedWMCS to weigh in on more matters that impact our listeners.

I feel like I lost a very best friend; depend heavily on 1290 for a number of things. I get loads of information and feel that the Morning Magazine was the best most informative show I have ever listen to and it is hard for me to listen to talk radio at work because it is usually boring and it puts see more... me to sleep, however that was never the case with the MM; job very well done absolutely fantastic Eric! Now my Saturday mornings and afternoon will never be the same I have absolutely nothing to listen to while doing my weekend chores make me not want to do them. Loretta Winston I don't know what to do on Sunday's while getting ready for church these past couple of Sundays I couldn't get my praise on like I use too and I miss the Sunday school lesson, I felt smart when I went to Sunday School. TJ (The other one) Lol! Truly missing you all!
