Locally owned, operated and programmed radio for the community, from the community! Classic Country 106.7 - WNKR WNKR stands for "Northern Kentucky Radio" and was founded in 1992 by local investors who believed that Northern Kentucky needed a radio station dedicated to its interests. We recognized that Northern Kentucky was ... See more a growing area of residents whose needs and tastes were not being catered to by existing outlets. In WNKR, there was finally a station dedicated to serving those needs. Now, as then, WNKR remains independently owned by Grant County Broadcasters, Incorporated. WNKR is our only broadcast interest, which means that the station receives our full attention at all times. We are committed to providing superior FM service to the area we cover. Our unique approach consists of the following: Local programming. The WNKR Classic Country music format is produced in-house, and is presented by local air personalities. 100% of WNKR newscasts are originated in-house and all newscasts contain local and area news items. 75% of WNKR play-by-play sports broadcasts are originated in-house. WNKR is the exclusive voice of Northern Kentucky's only professional sports team. WNKR's Classic Country format is designed to appeal to adults 35 to 54 years of age. We play the best country from 1975 to 2003. While music is the backbone of our presentation, we recognize that our audience does not live in a vacuum. News and traffic reports are featured in drive times, local news and agricultural features are heard weekdays at noon, with special programming on weekends. Sports play by play is University of Kentucky Sports and Florence Freedom Baseball. Special holiday features are scheduled throughout the Christmas season. Special news and public affairs programs on topics as diverse as the expansion of Williamstown Lake to election information are produced in-house and scheduled as the need arises. Using the Emergency Alert System, WNKR interrupts its regular programming automatically to present emergency information 24/7. Included in this are weather bulletins and other announcements from government agencies concerning emergency communications. WNKR participates in many area events on a regular basis. Our "big yellow van" is a fixture around the area. We are active in the area business community as members of the Grant County Chamber of Commerce and the Kentucky Broadcasters Association. WNKR provides service 24 hours daily. All broadcasts are in stereo. As the new century began, it became obvious that WNKR had outgrown our original studio location. In September 2004, we moved to brand new studios with state-of-the-art equipment and room to grow. These new facilities were constructed on the border between Williamstown and Dry Ridge. WNKR was originally authorized to operate on 106.5 FM, with a signal that had limitations. Early in 2008, WNKR completed a major signal upgrade. This upgrade included moving to 106.7 FM, increasing our power and antenna height, and constructing a complete new transmitter facility with new tower, antenna and transmitters. This upgrade improved our signal in many parts of Northern Kentucky that had received spotty coverage previously. 95% of Grant, Boone, Kenton, Campbell, Owen, Gallatin and Pendleton counties now receive a loud and clear signal from WNKR. These substantial investments by Grant County Broadcasters Incorporated underscore our ongoing commitment to providing our area with the highest quality FM service possible. We are unusual among area stations in that we have been under the same corporate ownership during our entire history. In this age of media consolidation, WNKR remains owned and operated by area residents who are serious about local radio. We are dependent on you - our listeners - and we are honored by your interest in our programs. No matter where you live, please consider this to be our personal invitation for you to experience quality, local radio on Classic Country 106.7 - WNKR, either over the air or here online. We look forward to having you with us.
