He was a fascinating man with an incredible life that spanned from his well-known early flirtation with the KKK to his position as one ... See more our fiercest supporters of civil rights. A man from the "hollers" who played a fiddle then educated himself into one of our most literate defenders of the Constitution. A man who served his state for over 5 decades and entered the history books as the longest serving member (ever) on Capital Hill. West Virginians should find a way to remember him and make sure future generations know about him. But not with a paid holiday. Not another 3-day weekend for picnic and shopping, not another missed day of school for kids who miss too many already. If the legislature wants to create a day to honor Byrd, why not mandate that our public schools take a day that focuses entirely on the teaching of our Constitution--so beloved by Senator Byrd?
