Utah Governor to Sign Vietnam Veterans Day Legislation In Capitol Ceremony - Veterans, Families, Public Invited Vietnam Veterans Day in Utah will be observed for the first time, officially, on Saturday March 29, 2014 with a stroke of the pen by Utah Governor Gary Herbert. Vietnam Veterans Day as a see more... permanent annual observance day is the result of the unanimous passing of HB275 by both Utah House and Senate. The law designates March 29 as Vietnam Veterans Day to honor and recognize those members of the U.S. armed forces who served during the Vietnam War Era for their dedicated service, sacrifice and courage. March 29, 1973, marked the withdrawal of the last U.S. Combat troops from Vietnam.. Nearly 28,000 young men from Utah served in the Vietham War. An estimated 50,000 Vietnam Veterans live in Utah today. HB275 establishing a permanent day of honor was spearheaded by Dennis Howland, President of Northern Utah Chapter of Vietnam Veterans of America and was sponsored by State Representative Curtis Oda. State Senator Peter Knudson co-sponsored the Bill. The Utah Department of Veterans and Military Affairs announced there will be a ceremony held in the Utah Capitol Rotunda at 9:30 a.m., on Saturday, March 29. The “Welcome Home” program that will include Governor Herbert signing the legislation and a Remembrance Ceremony at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on the West side of the Capitol Building. The program MCd by Salt Lake City TV 2 Sterling Poulson will feature remarks by Governor Herbert and Vietnam Veterans Dennis Howland and Terry Schow. Gold Star families of the 365 Utahans killed in Vietnam and families of the 14 MIAs unaccounted for have been invited to the ceremony. Also on hand for the ceremony will be Ross Morgan, the sculptor who created the State Capitol’s Vietnam Memorial and the Red Spirit Singers from the Uintah
