WHPK is dedicated to playing music not commonly heard on the mainstream. Our programming consists of a wide variety of music for an equally diverse listening audience. Such broad appeal is evident from the many formats we offer. These include: Rock, Jazz, Classical, International, Hip-Hop, and Folk, as well as specialty shows shows of avant-garde, Blues, dance music, and live in-studio performances.
WHPK is not only dedicated to music. It has an equally renowned Public Affairs Format where concerns of the community are voiced and where interviews with local politicians and other public figures can be heard.
Bands and labels wishing to have their music played on WHPK should contact the corresponding Music Director or Format Chief.
Community Radio
WHPK’s membership of approximately 160 people includes about 100 graduate and undergraduate students; the remaining being primarily community residents from the greater South Side. In addition to being one of the largest RSOs in the University, we are unique in the degree to which we promote interaction between undergraduates, graduate students and outside community members.
Membership at WHPK is open to any individual; while the majority are involved as DJ’s, students also gain experience as production assistants and administrators.
Station administration is handled by around ten to fifteen exceptionally committed student and community-member volunteers. This office staff is involved in handling relationships with record companies, publicity, maintenance of the record library, scheduling, cooperation with other student organizations, underwriting, licensing, discipline, and so on.
