2. Broadcast Licence
Following some test broadcasts from 1995, 5MBS operated from February 1998 under a series of Temporary Community Broadcast Licences (TCBLs) granted by the Australian Broadcasting Authority (ABA). The ABA called for applications for permanent licences in August 2001, closing in November. On 22nd August 2002 we were awarded a permanent 24 hour 7 day licence on a frequency of 99.9FM and resumed full time in November on 99.9FM.
3. How can you help?
We need more Members. Even though we are all volunteers, our permanent fixed costs total more than $70,000 per year. With membership fees at $60.00 and $42.00 we are just breaking even. Our main regular expenses are: transmitter site rental, electricity, building rental and operating costs. On top of these, we must establish reserves for additional equipment purchase and installation for the long term.
If you have an interest in Fine Music on radio in Adelaide, we urge you to become a 5MBS Member.
4. Part of the MBS Network.
There are MBS stations in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Canberra, which have operated under similar precepts to our own for many years. They too are committed to provide a superior broadcast service of mainly classical music. We are pleased to be part of this network, which we hope will some day be Australia wide.
5. An Overview of 5MBS.
The Music Broadcasting Society of South Australia Inc, broadcasts Fine Music to Adelaide listeners under the call sign 5MBS. We have a commitment to provide a top quality service, reflecting the listening needs of music lovers. While mainly classical music, our programming also includes many hours a week of jazz.
It is 5MBS policy to include a proportion of Australian compositions and performances in its programming, especially concerts and recitals recorded in Adelaide. We provide concert recordings free to performers, and also use them on air in certain programs.
We support the wider arts community, and we have several musical organisations as access groups, which prepare and present their own programs. We also promote on air the concerts and recitals of any such groups. We invite all musical and other arts groups to subscribe to our regular segment Arts Diary. Please support those who support Adelaide's Arts community!
5MBS is organised for the long term. We have a Management Committee, and standing committees dealing with Programming & Resources, Marketing and Fund Raising, and Training and Broadcast Standards. Our operating policies are flexible, and respond to the needs of the community. We are dedicated to providing Adelaide's musical listeners with the programs they desire and deserve.
