With sister stations WHTJ and WCVE, the network is known as "Community Idea Stations." As the originating station for the Idea Stations, WCVE was the first educational television station in the United States South, then affiliated with NET (National Education Television.) As of 2011, the Idea Stations broadcast to 44 school districts. In addition to the PBS programming, WCVW produces and broadcasts local programming, such as "Virginia Currents," profiling Virginia state residents.
