Founded in 1992, the mission of Manhattan Neighborhood Network (MNN) is to ensure the ability of Manhattan residents to exercise their First Amendment rights through ... See more the medium of cable television on an open, uncensored and equitable basis. MNN administers the four Public Access cable TV channels in Manhattan, reaching 620,000 cable subscribers on the RCN, Time Warner Cable and Verizon FiOS cable systems. In 2009, MNN presented 13,210 hours -- or about nine hours per day per channel -- of non-duplicative locally-produced programming in more than 40 languages. Cablecasting occurs 24 hours a day, seven days a week. MNN offers free training and certification classes in video production, editing and broadcasting to Manhattan residents. In the last five years, between 2005-2009, MNN trained 12,016 people and certified an average of 701 individuals annually. Studios, editing facilities and camera equipment are also available free of charge to Manhattan residents. Between 2005-2009, the following packages were checked out: · Studios: 19,351 times (average of about 74 times per week) · Editing: 40,650 times (average of about 156 times per week) · Camcorders: 10,229 checkouts (average of about 39 checkouts per week) In 2007, MNN acquired the historic El Barrio-East Harlem Firehouse in Upper Manhattan. Renovation is underway to create a state-of-the-art Community Media Center aimed at ensuring equitable access to new media skills and training services for all of Manhattan’s diverse neighborhoods, helping to overcome the digital divide. The Firehouse is slated to open in 2011. In providing services, we seek to involve the diverse racial, ethnic and geographic communities of Manhattan in the electronic communication of their varied interests, needs, concerns and identities. ------ Shows: Dance and Music Meditations
