It is an affiliate of America One, which airs primarily international sports programming in prime time, reruns and syndicated programming during the day, along with the syndicated “First Business “program. The network also carries a handful of live events, such as the annual New Year's Eve coverage of Atlanta's Peach Drop. Its children’s educational programming includes “Jack Hanna's Animal Adventures” five days per week, with other shows, such as “Real Life 101,” “What's Up! Que Pasa,” and “Planet X,” rotated to fill the remaining time. KGCS initially operated as a cable channel on the Joplin cable television system as a service of the Department of Communication in 1984. Programming included regular coverage of Joplin City Council meetings, and numerous programs presented by students, faculty and staff of the University. In 1988, over-the-air broadcast television programming began on a low-power television station, K57DR-TV. The call letters were changed in 1995 to KGCS-LP. In 2008, KGCS moved to local digital UHF channel 22. In addition to its America One Network programming, KGCS provides programs serving the Joplin Region, including interview shows, sports coverage and governmental coverage. Students assist with local productions, gaining valuable hands-on experience. As well, KGCS airs programming from the Classic Arts Showcase, with highlights of music classical arts productions.
